Educational Assistance Pays Off

Chad Sadler likes working in a nursing home because he can be a friend his patients can rely on when they are in pain or sick. Taking care of people and making them smile are some of the rewards Chad receives from being a nurse. In 1991, Chad trained to be a certified nurse assistant (CNA) at Leewood Manor in Milan, Missouri, and worked there for eight years.

Then, Chad decided to try something different and began working for a family business that installed low voltage cable. After a few years, he realized how much he missed taking care of people and took a position as a CNA for St. Mary’s Manor.

In 2004, he set a goal to advance in nursing and earn his LPN. He juggled working full time while he attended Penn Valley Community College ’s LPN program. Chad ’s employer built his work schedule around his classes, which met two nights a week and every other weekend. After 17 months, Chad earned his LPN and was immediately promoted to charge nurse when he graduated. In this role, Chad conducts assessments and monitors the well-being of his patients and supervises CNAs and medicine techs.

Chad already has set his next goal — He will start courses to become an R.N. By enrolling in a bridge program designed for nurses who already are an LPN.
