Emergency Medical Technician
Career Description
An EMT-1 (basic) has the least amount of training needed to qualify as an emergency medical technician. Along with other EMTs, an EMT-1 performs basic life support skills. An EMT-1 is accustomed to using stretchers, backboards, oxygen devices and splints. An EMT-3 (intermediate) performs the same tasks as an EMT-1 but also is skilled in more advanced emergency treatment. An EMT-4 (paramedic) undergoes the most training of all EMTs and may administer the most advanced emergency care. In rural areas, EMT-4s may be allowed to treat patients on the scene rather than taking them to an emergency medical facility.
